Join Dr. Bob Hylands for this Intermediate Pre-Recorded Ultrasound series that will cover the GI, Genitourinary, Liver, Spleen and Adrenal systems.
Dr. Hylands will review the anatomy and approach to these abdominal systems while demonstrating techniques to find and recognize common and uncommon pathologies and conditions. The live presentations will be given in the order that you see. The recordings can be accessed afterwards and viewed by module.
Upper GI Tract
This portion of the course will start with imaging at the level of the tongue and extend all the way to the lower jejunum. The course will focus on interpreting changes seen in the anatomical layering associated with distinct pathological conditions. This is emphasised as a superior way to interpret disease over simple direct measurements of the intestinal wall thickness. These observations will be used to identify conditions such as pancreatitis, IBD, lymphoma, lymphangectasia and peritonitis to name a few. The participant will leave with a stronger understanding of how pathology expresses itself through ultrasound imaging.
Lower GI Tract and Pathology
This section will discuss common conditions seen within the ileum, cecum, colon, rectum and perineal area. Diseases such as typhlitis, lymphoid hyperplasia, ulcerative colitis will be illustrated. This section will be followed with interesting patient studies that will demonstrate how to work up challenging abdominal cases.
Pathology of the Small Intestines
The third part of this series will discuss common pathology seen in the jejunum. Topics include how to diagnose a foreign body, intestinal cancer, intussusceptions, bacterial overgrowths and many others. Once again, the attendees will have a strong foundation to make educated decisions with respect to the management of these conditions.
Pancreas and Common Conditions
This module will first start with how to find the pancreas in both species. Diseases affecting the pancreatic duct and parenchyma will be discussed. The proper identification of pancreatitis plus its staging will be reviewed in detail. Complications of pancreatitis and their interventional resolution will also be presented to the participant. Upon attending this lecture, the concepts of chronic pancreatitis, nodular hyperplasia and neoplasia of the pancreas should also be well understood.
The first session will review renal anatomy. How to find different views or planes but more importantly, what are you seeing anatomy wise. We will review what the different echogenicity of the renal zones really represents and how pathology will cause a variation in their appearance. One of the most over-diagnosed renal diseases is pyelonephritis. This section will give you step by step directions on how to make an accurate diagnosis.
Multiple renal conditions and their pathology will be presented here. This module will cover the majority of diseases seen in both felines and canines. The ultrasonographic changes will be explained as to why they occur. This will give the attendee a better set of resources to make on the fly diagnosis of their own with added confidence. A partial list of diseases discussed include pyelectasia, renal failure, glomerulonephritis, neoplasia, diabetes, nephrocalcinosis, mineralization and nephrolith's.
Urinary Bladder and Reproductive Diseases
This section includes how to differentiate normal from abnormal bladder. We will review bladder pathology such as polyps, tumors and inflammation. Other topics will include interventional procedures such as biopsy collection methods and bladder lavage. The concept of Twinkle will be introduced in which it is shown to be helpful in diagnosing interstitial cystitis. The differentiation of different types of urinary calculi and the treatment of FUS cases will be presented in greater detail. There will be a brief discussion of reproductive conditions as well included in this discussion.
Pathology of the Spleen
The spleen is often underestimated for its ability to add to the diagnosis of disease conditions. Ultrasound examinations of the spleen can help diagnose diffuse lymphoma, erythropoiesis in end stage renal disease, Cushing's disease and even lymphoid nodular hyperplasia. Splenic torsion, infarcts and hemangiosarcoma will all be discussed to ensure that their diagnosis will be facilitated through ultrasonography
The first part of this lecture will predominantly discuss diagnostic tools settings within your ultrasound machine that will assist the attendee to better evaluate liver perfusion and function. Examples of this would include Doppler analysis of different venous blood flow patterns unique to certain pathology. Proper diagnosis of liver cirrhosis would be such an example.
The later part of this session will focus on more common liver pathology including hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, mucoceles, hepatitis and fatty liver to name a few. The finer details and pearls on how to diagnose conditions with confidence will be presented in this module.
Liver and Adrenal Gland Pathology
The second day of lectures will finish up on some conditions of the liver especially those that can be helpful in diagnosing Cushing's disease. This day will also focus diseases of the adrenal gland which are much more common than first originally thought. The trick is to differentiate benign conditions from the more serious consequential ones. This lecture will also help to effectively identify Addison's disease using ultrasonography. Another goal would be to help differentiate between non-secreting and secreting adrenal masses. Some of the concepts presented here are unique to the lecturer and will be discussed in class.
Adrenal Gland Pathology
This webinar will focus on diseases of the adrenal gland which are much more common than first originally thought. The trick is to differentiate benign conditions from the more serious consequential ones. This lecture will also help to effectively identify Addison's disease using ultrasonography. Another goal would be to help differentiate between non-secreting and secreting adrenal masses.
This course will be recorded and registrants that are not able to attend the live event fully will receive a copy of the recording that will be active for 3 months.
